Most of us grow up dreaming, in itself a voyage. In many ways, that never stops—nor should it. There are many wise sayings about the power of dreams and the importance of hanging on to them. There are many, too, who say that dreams are a child’s pursuit and unserious. But any dedicated dreamer knows that dreams are far more than whimsy. They are the chariots of imagination, and imagination is that part of the human spirit that has gotten us here after all these millennia.
Somebody once dreamt of traveling farther, of keeping warm through winter, or—in a sweltering town—of staying cool indoors. Eventually, imagination gave us wheels, furnaces, and air conditioning. This is why many of us know instinctively that even if we don’t always have dreams of our own, we can read.
“Imagination takes you places” is one of these wise old sayings.
Indeed it does. Faster than any means of travel our dreams have so far devised. And sometimes we don’t want—or need—to invent cooling or heating or new modes of transportation. We just want to imagine what life is like someplace else, some other time.
The best of books do just that.
From our couch, from bed, from a seat on public transit, we find ourselves in a new city, with a new family, we may even find ourselves speaking another language. We have new professions, different friends, new lovers. We dream a different version of ourselves in a different setting. Most of all, with each new place we learn a bit more about ourselves, about others, and we leave some of our prejudice behind.
Books have a way of letting us observe -and even to live- those those other lives intensely, which is possibly the only reason why, in a world saturated with images and streaming video, books still sell.
And this is why BiblioGlobe came to be: to help the armchair traveler find a new destination, one that fits the mood, the time, and especially the place. Because when you dream, you’re anywhere but here. And sometimes, we can all agree, that’s the best place to be. So get your passport and get reading.
